A fire broke out in a hostel room at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya in Jharkhand's Latehar district early on Monday morning, police reported, leading to a narrow escape for at least 25 girls residing there.

The blaze, suspected to be caused by an electrical short circuit, was first noticed around 6 am. It engulfed the beds and study materials of the students, but swift action from a fire tender and assistance from locals and students helped control the situation within an hour.

All 20-25 inmates of the affected hostel room were on the ground for physical training at the time of the incident, ensuring their safety. The school's hostel currently houses a total of 221 girls.
