Netflix's K-drama series, All of Us Are Dead, was a hit with audiences worldwide, drawing them into a story about a zombie apocalypse. Following the success of the first season, which ended with a cliffhanger, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of All of Us Are Dead Season 2. The director of the show, Lee Jae-kyoo, has already hinted that the series has room for expansion and that new races of zombies will be introduced.

"Many directions, settings and scenes were intentionally produced to expand the story into an additional season, including the introduction of the new races of zombies," said Lee

He continued, "If the first season can be seen as having presented humanity's survival, the next season can talk about the survival of zombies."

What happened earlier in All of Us Are Dead

At the end of All of Us Are Dead Season 1, the students successfully flee the school and take refuge in an abandoned neighborhood, only to discover that they are not alone and encounter a group of zombies. In the chaos, Dae-su injures his leg, and Woo-jin sacrifices himself to save his sister but is bitten in the process. To prevent him from turning into a zombie, Nam-ra is forced to kill him. While trying to escape, Nam-ra starts feeling an intense urge to consume her friends and is tormented by voices in her head. She almost attacks On-jo, but manages to control herself. Overwhelmed with guilt, Nam-ra abandons the group and disappears. The remaining six students - Su-hyeok, On-jo, Dae-su, Hyo-ryung, Mi-jin, and Ha-ri - finally make their way to an abandoned railway and are rescued by the military.

After four months, the government lifts martial law in Hyosan but still keeps residents under quarantine. The six students secretly leave the camp and return to their ruined school, where they are shocked to see Nam-ra, who appears to be healthy despite being a half-zombie. Nam-ra reveals that she has met other half-zombies who escaped from the school and declares that she will return. She then jumps off the rooftop, leaving the others behind. In a mid-credits scene, government officials transport Byeong-chan's wife and son's bodies to an undisclosed location.

What to expect from All of Us Are Dead Season 2

All of Us Are Dead Season 2 will center around the struggle for survival against the undead. Director Lee Jae-kyoo has made some significant changes from the original webtoon, and more changes can be expected in the upcoming season.

"I think the level of expression in a webtoon is very different from that in a film or drama series. In trying to make our series enjoyable to wide range of people, I definitely refined some characters and made them look less violent and murderous, including Gwi-nam and Na-yeon," Lee Jae-kyoo said (via the Korea Herald).

"It has been more than 30 years since I graduated high school. The original webtoon series began in 2009. I think 10 years is enough time for everything around us to change. I carefully monitored the expressions and behaviors of high school students today, though it was not easy. Some actions and expressions of today’s students were very difficult to comprehend in the mind of an adult. We carefully communicated with the actors, who were high school students themselves, to confirm these parts," the director said.

Lee has hinted that the story may explore the virus spreading to Japan, but it is unlikely that the entire story may move overseas as All of Us Are Dead is a South Korean production.

All of Us Are Dead Season 2 could explore the threat posed by the hybrids, such as Nam-ra, who can use the virus to their advantage while retaining their humanity. However, they still have an insatiable hunger for human flesh, making them a threat to everyone around them.

Lee has stated that he hopes the series will encourage viewers to make personal reflections, and this is likely to continue in the new season.

"The origin of [the] zombie virus was introduced in the series as an attempt to highlight the people who take responsibility and those who do not when an event, such as school violence, occurs. Though it is another zombie action thriller, I thought the series provides the viewers with a chance to think about what kind of people they are," he said.

Production updates for All of Us Are Dead Season 2

Pre-production for All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 has commenced, however, there has been no official announcement regarding the beginning of shooting. Considering the available updates, it seems unlikely that the new season will be released before the end of this year. Even if filming begins in February, probably, All Of Us Are Dead Season 2 will not air until early 2024. Our assumption is based on the fact that most series productions take around 12 months for filming and editing.
