The National Commission for Minorities has asked the producers of the Abhay Deol-starrer 'Trial by Fire', a web series based on Delhi's 1997 Uphaar cinema fire tragedy, to include the role of a Sikh family who laid down their lives reportedly saving others.
The NCM also asked the producers to send an ''action taken report'' on the commission's recommendation by June 7.
''By not showing the sacrifice done by Captain Manjinder Singh Bhinder and his family, the series discriminates against a brave Sikh who lost his life hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community,'' the NCM said.
In a statement, the NCM said it has been brought to the notice of the Commission that a web series named 'Trial by Fire', being streamed on the OTT platform Netflix, does not ''depict the role of Captain Manjinder Singh Bhinder, his wife and son who laid down their lives while saving others during the incident''.
Around 150 people were trapped in the fire, while Captain Manjinder Singh Bhinder and his family could have easily escaped, they decided to save people trapped in the fire, the NCM said.
The matter has been taken up by the Commission and the producers of the series have been requested to review it and add the role of Bhinder and his family to the web series 'Trial by Fire', the statement said.
'Trial by Fire' is produced by Henry Dcunha, Sidharth Jain, Rishi Negi, Vinod Iyer and Prashant Nair. It stars Deol, Rajshri Deshpande, Rajesh Tailang, Ratna Pathak, Shilpa Shukla, Shardul Bharadwaj, Ashish Vidyarthi and Anupam Kher, among others.
A massive fire had broken out at the Uphaar cinema during the screening of the Hindi film 'Border' on June 13, 1997, claiming 59.
