Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has canceled his planned flight around the moon aboard a SpaceX vehicle, citing uncertainties about the project’s timeline. The announcement came on Saturday, much to the disappointment of space enthusiasts who followed the ambitious endeavor.

Originally launched in 2018, the lunar voyage project—dubbed the “dearMoon” initiative—was meant to send Maezawa and eight companions on a historic journey around the moon. The initial aim was for a 2023 launch, a target deemed optimistic by many space experts, given the developmental pace of SpaceX's Spaceship mega-rocket.

In a heartfelt statement, Maezawa expressed his regrets: “Without clear schedule certainty in the near-term, it is with a heavy heart that I made the unavoidable decision to cancel the project.” The mission had garnered significant interest, selecting its eight travelers from a pool of one million applicants. Despite the project's fate, Maezawa extended his gratitude to its supporters, although he cannot plan his future under current circumstances.
