Annual Mela at Baba Chamliyal Shrine Returns Amid Tight Preparations

The annual mela at Baba Chamliyal shrine, near the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, will commence on June 27. This event, attracting thousands of devotees, had not seen Pakistani delegations since 2018. Authorities are ensuring thorough preparations for the smooth conduct of the mela.

The much-anticipated annual mela at the renowned Baba Chamliyal shrine, situated near the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, is set to kick off on June 27, officials announced on Saturday.

Historically celebrated for symbolizing Indo-Pakistani harmony, the shrine of Baba Dalip Singh Manhas, commonly known as Baba Chamliyal, had ceased receiving Pakistani delegations since June 2018, following a tragic incident where four BSF personnel, including an Assistant Commandant, were killed in cross-border firing.

Despite the absence of Pakistani participants, the local authorities are leaving no stone unturned in preparing for the event. Extensive reviews on security arrangements, emergency preparedness, and logistical support are underway. Special emphasis is being placed on ensuring proper lighting, traffic regulation, and setting up crucial amenities like the 'Lost and Found' counter.

In a meeting led by Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, various departments were urged to expedite their preparations. This includes the Roads and Buildings department focusing on road repairs, and the Public Health Engineering and Power Development Departments ensuring uninterrupted water and power supplies, respectively.

The mela will also include booths set up by different governmental departments to educate the public about welfare programs, ensuring the event’s dual purpose of devotion and community outreach.
