Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal revealed plans to attract 25 lakh tourists to India's lighthouses over the next five years, focusing on transforming these maritime landmarks into bustling tourist hotspots.

Following a stakeholder meeting and inspection at Vizhinjam lighthouse, Sonowal noted that the number of lighthouse tourists jumped from 3.5 lakh before 2014 to 17 lakh under the Modi government's initiatives. Out of 203 lighthouses, 75 have been developed so far, with the remaining set for future development.

Targeting Kovalam's tourist influx, the Vizhinjam lighthouse is slated for significant upgrades, including a unique light-and-sound show. Organised by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, the stakeholders' meeting aimed to highlight lighthouses' cultural and economic potential and to forge partnerships to boost tourism. The ministry is committed to revitalising lighthouses for economic and cultural benefits.
