Shia Community Gathers for Muharram Procession in Kashmir

The Shia community in Kashmir held a tightly secured Muharram procession on the traditional Guru Bazar-Dalgate route to mark the eighth day of mourning for Prophet Muhammad's grandson. Participants also highlighted issues in Palestine, while authorities ensured smooth proceedings without disrupting normal life.

Amid tight security, the Shia community in Kashmir on Monday carried out a Muharram procession along the traditional Guru Bazar-Dalgate route, commemorating the eighth day of mourning for Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

Some mourners displayed Palestinian flags and called for an end to violence against people in Palestine, officials reported.

The procession began at Guru Bazar, passing through Jehangir Chowk and Maulana Azad Road, and concluded at Dalgate. Thousands of mourners assembled at Guru Bazar at 5.30 am, following authorities’ restricted time window to avoid disruption of daily life.

The traffic department issued advisories for residents along the procession route, and the Srinagar Municipal Corporation arranged for road cleaning and volunteer water services for participants. This marks the second year in a row that authorities allowed the procession on this route after a lengthy ban due to security concerns.
