Jill Biden, the US first lady, visited American athletes at an Olympic training centre in Paris, offering them good luck and participating in a relay drill.

Her visit comes a day before the Summer Games' opening ceremony, where she will watch athletes parade on a flotilla of boats following a reception with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.

Amidst a politically charged environment in Washington, Biden spoke to the families of US athletes and later visited the competitors on their practice fields.

'America's athletes aren't only propelled by their years of sweat and sacrifice,' Biden said, addressing the crowd in front of a giant USA cutout. 'Your love is also there, pushing them further as they reach for gold.'

Biden hugged athletes, took pictures, and took part in a track drill at a training center in the northern Paris suburbs. Post opening ceremony, she will speak at a brunch celebrating the 2028 Olympics to be held in Los Angeles. LA Mayor Karen Bass is accompanying Biden on this Paris trip.
