Kolkata Film Industry Faces Prolonged Cease Work
The Kolkata film industry is currently at a standstill as directors and technicians are locked in a dispute. The impasse began with the debarment of a director and escalated with accusations, cease work, and the call for arbitration. The federation and key stakeholders express the urgency for a resolution.
The Kolkata film industry continued its impasse on Monday, with directors and technicians trading accusations as no shootings were held for the past three days.
The directors have decided to extend their cease work into Tuesday, while technicians refuse to work under a filmmaker recently debarred for alleged norm violations.
The federation criticized the suspension of work as a 'conspiracy,' announcing plans for a signature campaign to decide on the next steps.
The call for arbitration over 'stranglehold' rules marks a significant decline in investment. On Monday, director Raj Chakraborty emphasized the need for legal and filmmaking experts to mediate the issue.
At a press meet, Chakraborty blamed the federation's rigidity for prolonging the dispute, emphasizing the need for flexibility from all parties for resolution.
Swarup Biswas, president of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, accused the directors of intransigence, stressing the dire need to resume work for 8,000 technicians.
A meeting on May 5 mutually agreed to alter roles for the disputed director, but a subsequent violation of this agreement has furthered the conflict, according to federation joint secretary Sujit Kumar Hazra.
The Eastern India Motion Pictures Association urged both sides to resolve their differences swiftly, emphasizing the need to resume work for the industry's welfare.
