A new Guinness World Record was set in Madhya Pradesh on Monday under the 'largest damru ensemble' category, with nearly 1,500 participants playing the small power drums on the Mahakaleshwar temple campus in Ujjain, officials said.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the participants for achieving the new world record.
The event, organized by the Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee and the MP government's Culture Department, brought together around 1,500 damru players on the temple campus, one of the 12 jyotirlingas in India.
World record consultant Nischal Barot stated that more than 1,500 damru players attempted the feat, breaking the previous record of 488 participants set by the Federation of Indian Associations in New York in August 2022.
While the exact number of participants is yet to be confirmed, Barot emphasized that it surpassed the previous mark.
Guinness World Records certified the new record, presenting a certificate to commemorate the achievement.
CM Yadav expressed his joy, stating, 'The wish to make the city of Baba Mahakal resonate with the sound of damru has come true.'
'On the third Monday of Shravan, Ujjain registered its name in the Guinness Book of World Records by playing Damru to the tune of Bhasma Aarti,' Yadav added.
District Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh explained that more than 1,300 participants played damru on the temple campus, dedicating the new record to the deity. Participants from various districts contributed to this record-breaking event.
Previously, the record was held by NRIs in New York during the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' with 488 participants, Singh noted.
