Kerala Landslide Tragedy: Three Migrant Workers Missing, One Death Reported

A devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala has resulted in the death of one migrant worker and three others reported missing. A total of 406 migrant workers were relocated to relief camps. The state government is coordinating efforts to provide food and counselling services to the displaced workers.

The Kerala government has reported that three migrant labourers are missing and one has died following a catastrophic landslide in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions of Wayanad on July 30. Another worker is currently hospitalized.

In the aftermath, 406 'guest workers' have been relocated to various relief camps. These workers and their families hail from multiple states including Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Harrisons Malayalam Limited employed 321 of these workers, while 28 worked at the Rani Mala Tea Estates. The labour department has established a facilitation centre to ensure they receive food and counselling. At least 25 department staff are overseeing their welfare.

The death toll from the landslides has climbed to 222, with 172 bodies identified by relatives. Currently, 2,514 individuals from 723 families have been housed in relief camps. Among them are 943 men, 972 women, and 599 children, including six pregnant women. Additionally, 31 unclaimed bodies and 158 body parts have been interred in nearby tea estate graves.
