The Visva-Bharati university in West Bengal's Santiniketan announced on Tuesday that its annual tree plantation programme, traditionally observed on the death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore on August 7, will be relocated this year.

The 'Briksha Ropan' ceremony will take place at the old fairground instead of the Bangladesh Bhavan, the university's executive council stated in a notice.

According to Atig Ghosh, a spokesperson for the central university, the decision was made due to the current situation in Bangladesh, making it symbolically inappropriate to hold the event at the Bhavan. The cultural and museum complex was inaugurated in 2018 by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina, funded by Bangladesh. Established in 1921 by Tagore, Visva-Bharati remains a pivotal cultural and educational institution.
