Russian pianist Pavel Kushnir has died in jail while awaiting trial on charges tied to his criticism of Moscow's military action in Ukraine, according to news reports on Tuesday.

Mediazona, an independent Russian news outlet, confirmed that Kushnir, 39, passed away on July 28 in a Birobidzhan jail. His mother, Irina Levina, revealed that he had been on a hunger strike when he died. Official statements from Russian authorities were not provided.

Arrested in May for his anti-Kremlin YouTube posts, Kushnir's death highlights the growing suppression of opposition voices since Russia's 2022 Ukraine invasion. The crackdown has led to criminal charges, fines, and detentions for activists, journalists, and government critics.
