Shreyas Royal, a 15-year-old British Indian chess prodigy, has become England’s youngest grandmaster after securing his latest victory in the British Chess Championships. The London schoolboy's remarkable journey includes beating records and earning UK citizenship, supported by campaigns and a government investment in chess education.

Shreyas Royal, a 15-year-old British Indian chess prodigy, has been crowned England's youngest grandmaster following his triumph in the British Chess Championships.

The young talent overcame the final GM Norm — a crucial performance benchmark — in Hull last week, marking a significant milestone for his family after they received UK residency in 2018 due to his exceptional chess skills.

“It feels great to repay the country for the opportunities it has given us,” said Jitendra Singh, Royal’s father. Defeating David Howell's record from 2007, Shreyas' notable performances included victories and draws against top Grand Masters.

Shreyas offered advice to other young players: “Keep persisting through setbacks and failures; they define your character.”

Shreyas' journey from Bangalore to the UK at the age of three was backed by the English Chess Federation, which recognized his talent and campaigned for his stay.

The UK government has since supported young chess talents, including Shreyas, with investment in chess education.
