Hero's Welcome for Filipino Olympian Carlos Yulo

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo, who brought home two gold medals from the Paris Olympics, received a hero's welcome on Tuesday. A national tribute, planned by the president, accompanied more than $1 million in pledged cash and gifts, including a resort house and lifelong free lunch buffets.

Yulo, 24, secured his victories in the men's floor exercise and vault, marking the most significant win by a Filipino athlete since the nation joined the Games a century ago. In addition to Yulo, Filipino boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas earned bronze medals in women's boxing in Paris.

The unity and pride inspired by Yulo's achievements provide a welcome break from the poverty, divisions, and conflicts that have long afflicted the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. praised Yulo, saying, “Filipinos all over the world stood united, cheering and rooting for you.” Upon arrival in Manila, Yulo and his fellow Olympic athletes were greeted by flag-waving admirers and then taken to Malacanang palace for a formal honor ceremony.

Generous pledges from the government, corporate entities, and business magnates totaled more than 58 million pesos ($1 million). Prominent companies even offered free pizzas, ice creams, and lifetime lunch and dinner buffets to Yulo. Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao also promised to reward the gymnast with an unspecified cash amount.

A celebratory parade is scheduled for Wednesday along Manila’s main streets, expected to attract thousands. The parade will pass by the poor neighborhood where Yulo first trained in gymnastics, bringing his story full circle.
