Late freedom fighter Krishnanand Upreti, born in 1895 near Pithoragarh, opened the first Congress office in his region and played a crucial role in ending the British-era 'Coolie-Begar' practice. His efforts are recognized in a biography released by the Centre among a series of works highlighting freedom fighters ahead of the 78th Independence Day.

Upreti’s grandson, Rajesh Mohan Upreti, expressed pride in his grandfather’s contributions to India's freedom struggle, noting that despite great sacrifices, he did not live to see India's independence. Upreti joined the Congress in 1920 and became a key figure in the 'Coolie-Begar' movement, leading public meetings and inciting local action against British exploitation.

In addition to spearheading social reform and forest movements, Upreti also fought against local landlord atrocities and contributed to education by establishing the first high school in Pithoragarh. His dedication and passion continue to inspire the local community.
