Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. Pradhan asserted that attempts to intimidate the public would only amplify the demand for justice.
On Sunday, students from various medical colleges in Kolkata took to the streets to demand justice for the trainee doctor, allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In a social media post, Pradhan castigated Mamata Banerjee's administration, accusing the police of attempting to erase evidence and preventing people from showing solidarity with the victim’s family. Describing these actions as dictatorial, Pradhan insisted that protests would not be silenced.
A Kolkata Police civic volunteer has been taken into custody in connection with the case, which has now been handed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following a Calcutta High Court directive.
The hospital premises experienced vandalism shortly after midnight on Wednesday, coinciding with protests led by women against the tragic incident, adding to the unrest in the state.
