Junior doctors of different medical colleges persisted with their protest in Kolkata on Tuesday, continuing their demand for the resignation of Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Staging a sit-in on B B Ganguly Street, the protest has lasted over 23 hours since they were barred from advancing to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar.
Accompanied by common people and students from other institutions, the doctors spent all of Monday night on the street, just half a kilometer from Lalbazar, blocked by a heavy police barricade. The barricade was reinforced with chained guardrails and padlocks, surveilled by a significant police presence.
Demonstrators positioned a symbolic replica of a spine adorned with red roses against the barricade, underscoring the police's responsibility to safeguard citizens. This sentiment was echoed loudly through chants demanding justice and security for all, including the medical community. Despite attempts by Police Additional Commissioner Santosh Pandey to negotiate, the protestors stood firm on their demand to meet the commissioner and continued to display placards and burn effigies as part of their agitation.
Furthermore, the group called for severe penalties for those involved in the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College, criticizing the police's handling of the investigation before it was transferred to the CBI.
