Visa Woes: Delay in Implementing Free On-Arrival Visas for Tourists

Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles announced that granting free on-arrival visas to tourists from 38 countries, including India, will be delayed until October, pending parliamentary approval. Alles stated that a new gazette to implement this change requires parliamentary backing.
Last week, presidential advisor on tourism Harin Fernando mentioned that the scheme was to be implemented immediately following Cabinet approval. However, parliamentary approval is needed, and the Parliament will not convene before the September 21 presidential election.
The tourism industry is demanding an immediate end to significant delays experienced by travellers at Colombo International Airport.
In April, a foreign company was contracted to issue on-arrival visas, leading to long wait times for entry at the airport. The Supreme Court later instructed the Immigration Department to suspend the private operation and manage the visa service themselves.
Minister Alles stated the process to revert to the previous system is ongoing, with an increase in airport counters aimed at reducing delays.
