Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin made history on Tuesday by becoming the first woman to lead the Armed Forces Medical Services as its director general, the Ministry of Defence announced.
The DGAFMS holds direct responsibility for medical policy matters pertaining to the armed forces, reporting directly to the Ministry of Defence.
Prior to this appointment, Sarin held prominent roles, including DG Medical Services (Navy), DG Medical Services (Air), and Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.
Commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services in December 1985, she is an alumna of AFMC Pune and has advanced medical degrees from premier institutions.
Throughout her 38-year career, Sarin has served in all three branches of the Indian armed forces, earning numerous awards for her dedication, including the Ati Vishist Seva Medal and Vishist Seva Medal.
The Supreme Court has recently appointed her to the National Task Force for safe working conditions and protocols for medical professionals.
Sarin continues to inspire young women to join the armed forces and is celebrated as an icon of the 'Nari Shakti' initiative.
