Pro-Palestinian demonstrators occupied an administrative building at the University of Minnesota on Monday, demanding the institution divest from Israel and repeal its political neutrality stance. Organizers reported arrests following the protest, which saw participants barricading entrances with chairs.
Named 'Halimy Hall' in remembrance of Palestinian TikTok creator Medo Halimy, who died in an Israeli airstrike, the occupation by around 30 protestors inside was supported by a larger group outside, equipped with tents and supplies to sustain their demonstration until demands are met.
The protest aligns with nationwide campus movements pressing universities over their ties with Israel amid the Gaza conflict, raising questions about free speech and potential antisemitism. The University of Minnesota's homecoming week coincidentally began on the same day.
