India officially took over the chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) on Friday, marking a pivotal moment for the regional fisheries sector. This transition occurred during the 13th Governing Council Meeting in Malé, Maldives, where India succeeded Bangladesh in leading the organization.
The BOBP-IGO, established in 2003, is committed to enhancing the livelihoods and living standards of small-scale and artisanal fishers in the Bay of Bengal region. Current members include Bangladesh, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, with additional cooperation from non-contracting parties like Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.
Leading the Indian delegation, Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, stressed India's dedication to enhancing the work of BOBP-IGO. The focus will be on marine resource management, capacity building, policy advocacy, and tackling illegal fishing. The ongoing collaboration aims to strengthen the region's blue economy and support sustainable development and poverty alleviation.
