In a significant move to enhance tourist connectivity, Kerala is set to integrate seaplanes into its transportation repertoire, primarily focusing on dams and backwaters. Announced during the 2025-26 budget, the state has allocated Rs 20 crore to support this initiative, alongside developing heliports and airstrips.

Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas highlighted the strategic use of seaplanes between dams, such as the Malampuzha dam in Palakkad. The state is in active discussions with central entities to facilitate private investments and simplify regulations for seaplane operations.

In 2024, Kerala's tourism soared by 21% from pre-pandemic levels, attracting more than 2.22 crore tourists. Complementary projects, including those under the Centre's regional connectivity scheme, aim to further bolster tourism infrastructure, ensuring seamless access to the state's numerous picturesque destinations.
