The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) finds itself ensnared in controversy following revelations that prominent Kannada actor Ranya Rao was involved in a gold smuggling scandal shortly after her company was granted land for a steel plant. The allocation by the previous BJP government in early 2023 has now come under scrutiny.
Minister M B Patil's office clarified that the steel plant's proposal – valued at Rs 138 crore – was granted in-principle approval to generate around 160 jobs. Land for the project was ratified during the 137th State Level Single Window Clearance Committee meeting, detailing government support and incentives.
Following Ranya's arrest with gold worth Rs 12.56 crore, further assets were seized, including jewelry and currency. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence mentioned a total seizure of Rs 17.29 crore, striking a blow to organized gold smuggling. Complications arise with Ranya's stepfather, Ramachandra Rao, a senior IPS officer, involved in the case.
