The controversy over Holi celebrations at Sonajhuri Haat in West Bengal has stirred political and environmental discussions. Allegations emerged that the Mamata Banerjee government prohibited festivities to appease a specific community, while the state forest minister clarified it as a call for environmental protection.

Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized the supposed restriction as political appeasement, stating concerns about denied Holi celebrations aligning with Ramzan fasting. However, Forest Minister Birbaha Hansda countered, asserting the banners simply urged caution for ecological preservation without enforcing a total ban.

Despite allegations, the forest department highlighted Sonajhuri's protected status and advised against large gatherings. Visva Bharati University affirmed its closure for Holi due to its UNESCO status. With police backing, officials hope for public responsibility in respecting environmental guidelines during celebrations.
