Maharashtra's Bold Plan: Empowering Snake Rescuers with ID and Insurance

The Maharashtra government is working to equip snake rescuers with identity cards and Rs 10 lakh accident insurance coverage, acknowledging their vital contributions to reducing human-wildlife conflicts. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced this initiative on Thursday.

The proposal is pending a formal recommendation to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a high-level discussion. Minister Bawankule emphasized that snake rescuers often risk their lives to aid villagers and protect snakes. Plans are underway to issue them official identification cards and provide substantial accident insurance coverage.

To bolster efficiency and accountability, a dedicated portal will list certified snake rescuers on the forest department's website. This platform will facilitate quicker emergency response and offer the public access to verified contact details. The move also aims to fortify wildlife conservation efforts.
