A controversy over the gold-clad plates of the Dwarapalaka idols at Sabarimala has escalated into a political firestorm, with accusations flung by both ruling and opposition parties. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan slammed the event as a 'theft of Sabarimala properties,' urging for intensified security around the Ayyappa idol and a full investigation into the events of 2019.
Satheesan strongly criticized the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) and the government for sending the plates for replating outside the temple. In his view, the current investigation only scratches the surface, demanding a comprehensive probe into alleged thefts involving the sacred temple property. Accusations also came from All India Congress Committee General Secretary K C Venugopal, who described the situation as gold smuggling.
Acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations, the Kerala High Court has stepped in, ordering an investigation under its supervision. Amidst calls for accountability and further inquiry, Devaswom Minister V N Vasavan stated that future actions will depend on the court's directives, promising transparency and resolution to the devotees' concerns.
