Global Discrepancy in Rath Yatra Dates Faces Scrutiny

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has found itself at odds with the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee (SJTMC) over the scheduling of the annual Rath Yatra. SJTMC chairperson, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, urged ISKCON to conduct the event globally on one specific date, as outlined by sacred texts.
While ISKCON has agreed to adhere to prescribed dates for the Snana Yatra across its worldwide temples, it has cited various challenges preventing a uniform Rath Yatra date. These include difficulties in obtaining permissions abroad, weather conditions, and volunteer availability during weekdays.
Despite ISKCON's stance, SJTMC remains firm on the matter. In a letter to ISKCON, Deb argued that other festivals comply with specific dates and emphasized the importance of maintaining tradition. Deb also proposed alternative solutions if uniformity in celebrating the Rath Yatra is not feasible.
