On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu made history as she became the first woman head of state to visit the renowned Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala. Her visit marks a significant moment, as she follows in the footsteps of the late President V V Giri, who was the first Indian President to visit the temple during the 1970s.

The President arrived at Pamba in a special convoy and participated in traditional rituals, including washing her feet in the Pampa river and visiting nearby temples. Alongside her were her ADC and family members, who prepared sacred bundles for the religious ceremonies. President Murmu later climbed the revered 18 holy steps to reach the sanctum.

Accompanied by district dignitaries, she completed her visit by offering prayers at adjacent shrines. Her itinerary in Kerala extends beyond the temple visit, encompassing the unveiling of a bust of former President K R Narayanan and inaugurating various cultural events. The tour will conclude with a visit to St Teresa's College in Ernakulam on October 24.
