India has swiftly responded to the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka by launching 'Operation Sagar Bandhu', providing essential relief supplies to the afflicted island nation. With over 43,900 people affected and a death toll of at least 56, urgent aid is crucial.
The Indian Navy's aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and stealth frigate INS Udaigiri have already delivered the first tranche of relief materials to Colombo. Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Sri Lanka of India's readiness to support further as guided by the Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.
The Indian vessels are also in Sri Lanka to participate in the International Fleet Review organized in celebration of the Sri Lanka Navy's 75th anniversary, featuring naval ships from various countries. Sri Lankan officials have additionally relied on INS Vikrant for cyclone relief operations.
