Renowned sculptor Ram Sutar, celebrated for his monumental creations including the iconic Statue of Unity, passed away at his residence in Noida on Wednesday night. His son, Anil Sutar, confirmed the news, stating that the 100-year-old had been battling age-related ailments.
Sutar's artistic journey began in his childhood village of Gondur, under Dhule district, Maharashtra. A gold medallist from the acclaimed JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai, Sutar's portfolio includes notable works such as the meditating Mahatma Gandhi and the equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji on the Parliament premises.
His contributions to the field of sculpture earned him the Padma Shri in 1999, the Padma Bhushan in 2016, and recently, the Maharashtra Bhushan Puraskar. Sutar's legacy continues to inspire, immortalizing significant figures and moments in Indian history through his art.
