Veteran trade union leader Chandrashekhar Basu, a senior CPI(M) member, passed away at his Bidhannagar residence early Friday morning, as confirmed by party sources.

At 103, Basu remained the oldest CPI(M) member at the time of his death. His significant role in the insurance employees' movement, as both president and general secretary of the All India Insurance Employees' Association (AIIEA), marked an impressive legacy.

Colleagues like Left Front chairman Biman Bose and CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim expressed their deep condolences, while AIIEA general secretary Srikant Mishra also paid tribute to Basu's immense contributions. Basu's active participation in the Left movement from his days at the University of Calcutta, through his work with Hindustan Insurance Company from 1944 onward, showcased his lifelong commitment to labor rights.
