Prada Unveils Luxe Kolhapuri-Inspired Collection Celebrating Indian Handcraft
Prada's new limited edition sandal collection, inspired by India's Kolhapuri chappals, champions traditional craftsmanship. They collaborated with Maharashtra's LIDCOM to protect and promote leathercraft, showcasing this art at global stores. The partnership promises advanced artisan training, marking a cultural and economic achievement for India's craft sector.
On Monday, luxury brand Prada unveiled a limited edition sandal line inspired by India's iconic Kolhapuri chappals. This collection is now available across 40 select Prada stores worldwide and on its online platform. Manufactured in India by artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka, the launch is not just a commercial milestone but also marks global recognition for a centuries-old craft.
Smt. Prerna Deshbhratar, IAS, Managing Director of LIDCOM, highlighted the cultural significance of this recognition, emphasizing the institution's decades of work protecting and promoting Maharashtra's leather artisans. Awarded a GI tag in 2009, the Kolhapuri chappal's global debut underscores LIDCOM's achievements and exemplifies India's rich craftsmanship being embraced internationally.
Prada's collaboration extends beyond the collection, supporting a three-year artisan training initiative in India and Italy. This partnership, catalyzed by an online backlash for an earlier collection, was meticulously structured to uphold artisan welfare. The deal, revealing a new model for crafting international agreements, aims to create long-term value for artisans, fortifying India's craft sector globally.
