Dancing Against the Tides: African Dance Biennial's Challenge in Senegal
The African Dance Biennial, Africa's largest contemporary dance showcase, took place in Toubab Dialao, Senegal. The event highlighted the Ecole des Sables' role in dance education. But, a nearby port project threatens its future. Local arts groups are uniting to oppose the development and preserve this cultural institution.
The African Dance Biennial brought together 25 dance companies to Toubab Dialao, Senegal, for a vibrant celebration over the weekend. Known as the continent's largest contemporary dance showcase, this year's event underscored the cultural significance of the Ecole des Sables. The venue, renowned for its role in professional dance training, has long been a hub for African choreography.
Founded by Germaine Acogny, the School of Sands merges contemporary and traditional African dance styles in its open-air studio. Recent productions, such as Pina Bausch's 'The Rite of Spring,' have further cemented the school's global reputation. However, the institution now faces an existential threat as a billion-dollar port project looms nearby, potentially encroaching on its land.
The development, led by Dubai Port World, risks altering the village's natural landscape, raising concerns among artists. As such, local arts institutions are collaborating to resist the expansion, aiming to preserve the unique cultural ecosystem that the Ecole des Sables represents.
