The Film Heritage Foundation is poised to make its mark for the fifth year running at the Cannes Film Festival. This year's spotlight is on the 4K restoration of John Abraham's 'Amma Ariyan,' an iconic Malayalam film from 1986, making it the sole Indian feature selected for a world premiere at the esteemed event.

Set against the politically fraught backdrop of 1970s Kerala, the film chronicles Purushan’s journey to inform a mother of her son’s death, evolving into a profound commentary on memory and ideology. Known for his unconventional narratives and political engagement, Abraham remains a towering figure in Indian cinema.

This cinematic gem, recognized by the British Film Institute as one of the top ten Indian films, was crafted outside traditional commercial frameworks. Its restoration faced challenges due to the absence of the original negatives, yet it stands testament to the Foundation's dedication to preserving cinematic history for future generations.
