Bengali Film Industry in Turmoil: Calls for Leadership Change

Amid rising tensions, producers and distributors in the Bengali film industry are demanding the resignation of Pia Sengupta, chairperson of the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA). The protesters have accused Sengupta of a biased leadership style that is allegedly politically influenced.

The conflict reached a peak when protesters gathered outside EIMPA's office multiple times, conducting purification rituals and celebrating with saffron-colored gulal. The discontent stems from a perceived lack of transparency in the organization's functioning. Protests commenced on May 4, coinciding with the vote count, demanding structural changes within EIMPA.

While Sengupta insists that her role remains apolitical and neutral, she lodged a complaint feeling unsafe amid the protests, leading to police presence at the site. A meeting between the opposing sides is scheduled for May 8, where they aim to resolve issues concerning democratic processes at EIMPA.
