AKS Zly, a grassroots soccer club in Warsaw, is challenging Poland’s prevailing nationalist fan culture. Created in 2015 by supporters disillusioned with the aggressive stadium environment, the club promotes inclusivity and diversity. AKS Zly stands as a unique space where all people, regardless of identity, feel welcome.
The club’s foundation was an act of defiance against the mainstream fan culture's shift towards extreme right ideologies. President Karol Nawrocki, aligned with nationalist politics, symbolizes the opposition AKS Zly is combating. However, this opposition may drive more support to the club, according to Jan Dziubecki, a club coordinator.
AKS Zly remains a community-driven organization celebrating local history and fostering social unity. Juliusz Wrzosek, a founding member, highlights the club's democratic ethos. Fans, like Eliza Górska-Tran, who was celebrated by the club for her same-sex marriage, stress its supportive nature. The club, equally supporting men's and women's teams, serves as a sanctuary for inclusivity in Polish sports.
