NCP Leader Predicts Escalating Protests Over Farmers' Issues in Maharashtra

Shashikant Shinde of NCP warns that if the Maharashtra government does not address farmers' grievances, protests could intensify. Current demonstrations have pressured the state to seek central assistance regarding crop pricing and policy changes.

Shashikant Shinde, head of Maharashtra's NCP, has issued a warning that the state's protests might intensify if the government fails to promptly address farmers' issues. He emphasized the impact of opposition-led protests demanding fair pricing for onions, which compelled the Mahayuti government to engage with the Centre for solutions on agricultural concerns.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition has spearheaded extensive state-wide protests, urging better pricing for onions and modifications in the export policy. Demonstrations, which included road blockades, marches, and other forms of protest, took place in major onion farming regions such as Chandwad, Nashik district, and Junnar.

Shinde cautioned that overlooking farmers' grievances could escalate into broader state-wide unrest. He criticized the government's narrative labeling these protests as political gimmicks, asserting that it is the government's lack of effective response driving the opposition to the streets.

The NCP leader further criticized the Devendra Fadnavis-led administration, arguing that the need to discuss agricultural issues in Delhi reflects inadequate leadership at the state level. On the topic of Maratha activist Manoj Jarange's plans for further agitations, Shinde urged the state government for timely decision-making to prevent escalation.
