Suman Kalyanpur, an iconic figure in Indian music famous for hits like 'Na Na Karte' and 'Tumne Pukara', passed away on Sunday night at the age of 89 at her home due to age-related health conditions. Her passing was confirmed by her friend Mangala Khadilkar, who penned her biography 'Suman Sugandh'.
During the 1960s and 70s, Kalyanpur became beloved for her unique voice, carving a distinct space in the industry alongside contemporaries like Lata Mangeshkar. She performed in several Indian languages and genres, including devotional music and ghazals, though she often shrugged off comparisons to Mangeshkar.
Despite others drawing parallels between their voices, Kalyanpur regarded Mangeshkar as a cherished friend, recounting collaborative memories and mutual admiration in interviews. Her funeral will occur on Monday at the Pawan Hans crematorium.
