Focus Features' horror-romance sensation, 'Obsession,' has shattered the studio's box office records, amassing more than USD 224.7 million globally, as reported by Deadline. Helmed by Curry Barker, the film surpassed the previous record-holder, 'Downton Abbey,' which had collected USD 194.6 million worldwide.

As of May 31, 'Obsession' carved its place as Focus Features' top-grossing title domestically, outpacing many of the studio's major releases over the years. Notably, the film was produced on an incredibly modest budget of USD 750,000 and became part of Focus Features' offerings after a USD 15 million acquisition post its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight section.

The film marks Curry Barker's feature directorial debut, initially captivating audiences through festival circuits, including SXSW. Garnering robust word-of-mouth, 'Obsession' demonstrated impressive longevity at the box office in its fourth weekend, grossing USD 25.6 million in North America—a historic fourth-weekend performance for a horror film, eclipsing 'The Blair Witch Project's' 1999 feat.

Internationally, 'Obsession' added USD 17.7 million in its fourth weekend abroad. The film's global earnings now total USD 224.7 million, with USD 152.1 million stemming from the domestic box office and USD 72.6 million from international markets. It has notably succeeded in regions such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, amassing USD 13.8 million, and USD 4.4 million in India, ranking among the top-performing Hollywood horror films in the nation.

Concurrent with 'Obsession's success, A24's 'Backrooms' and Lionsgate's 'Michael' also headlined box office achievements, becoming each studio's highest-grossing global hits. (ANI)
