Tear Gas and Tension: Protests Erupt Over Nairobi National Park Expansion
Protesters clashed with riot police in Nairobi, Kenya, over plans to develop a section of the Nairobi National Park. The project aims to expand an animal orphanage but is met with criticism for encroaching on protected land. Notable figures like former Chief Justice David Maraga were arrested.
Riot police deployed tear gas to disperse protesters who gathered on Monday to oppose development plans within Nairobi National Park. The demonstration, which included the arrest of former Chief Justice David Maraga, took place outside the park's main entrance.
The Kenya Wildlife Service argues the project will enhance an animal orphanage located at the site, marking it as Africa's sole wildlife reserve situated within a capital city. However, the protesters, brandishing signs reading slogans like 'Nature is not vacant land,' argue the proposed expansion—featuring a parking area for over 1,000 vehicles—will infringe upon one of Kenya's renowned protected spaces.
Located just 10km from Nairobi's central business district, the park is home to diverse wildlife, including rhinos, lions, buffalo, and leopards, set against the city's skyline. 'We are gathered here because Nairobi National Park is once again under threat,' stated activist Nyaguthii Chege to reporters.
