Tragedy at Sea: Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Maltese Coast
A migrant boat capsized near Malta, resulting in the death of 11 people, while 48 survivors were rescued. The boat had departed from Libya with 60 passengers. This incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis as migrant crossings rise ahead of summer, with Italy enforcing stricter immigration policies.
At least 11 individuals have died following the capsizing of a migrant boat off Malta's coast, the charity group Sea-Watch reported on Monday. Approximately 50 people were rescued at sea by a nearby fishing vessel.
The Italian coastguard revealed on Sunday that the vessel left Libya carrying about 60 people before overturning 45 nautical miles east-southeast of Malta. Rome dispatched a patrol boat, initially recovering 10 bodies. Sea-Watch later announced on social media platform X that at least 11 people had died, with 48 survivors rescued by the vessel Tuncay Sagun 2.
As the season of migrant departures intensifies from North Africa towards Europe, Italy, Malta, and Greece remain prime landing spots. According to the U.N.'s International Organization for Migration, at least 827 people have perished or disappeared in 2023 crossing the central Mediterranean. Italy has tightened its immigration measures under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, witnessing reduced numbers of migrant landings compared to last year.
