Amy Heckerling to direct Darren Criss-starrer Quibi series 'Royalties'

Filmmaker Amy Heckerling will be tackling musical comedy "Royalties" for the upcoming streaming service Quibi. Heckerling, who has films such as "Clueless", "Vamps" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" to her credit, will direct all the ten episodes of the series, Deadline reported.

"American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace" star Darren Criss is playing the lead role in the show. He will also executive produce and write songs for the series. Described as a "satirical take on the oft-untold story of songwriters behind the world's biggest hits", the show will follow the ascent of a ragtag songwriting duo Sara and Pierce (Criss) as they navigate the strange and hilarious challenges of creating a truly great song, week after week.

In every episode, real-life entertainment personalities will be making appearances, portraying fictional music stars. Apart from Criss, the project will be executive produced by Nick and Matt Lang, Gail Berman, Hend Baghdady, Joe Earley and Ricky Rollins.

Quibi, co-founded by Hollywood heavyweight Jeffrey Katzenberg and former HP CEO Meg Whitman, is set to launch next year.
