The initial trip of Vajpayee was not easy, born in the house of a school teacher on December 25, 1924, in a lower middle-class family in Gwalior, Vajpayee's early education-initiation was done in Victoria (now Laxmibai) College of Gwalior and DAV College of Kanpur.

He started his career in journalism after postgraduate in political science. He edited the Rashtra Dharma, Panchjanya, and Veer Arjuna. In 1951 he was the founding member of the Jana Sangh. From his eloquent art, he started coloring in the early days of politics.

However, he lost in a Lok Sabha sub-election in Lucknow. In fact, in 1957, the Jan Sangh contested the three Lok Sabha seats from Lucknow, Mathura, and Balrampur. He lost the election in Lucknow, same was with Mathura but he won the election from Balrampur and reached the Lok Sabha.

At the same time, he started his five-decade parliamentary career in the corridor of Parliament. From 1968 to 1973 he was the President of the Jana Sangh. Like his other colleagues from the opposition parties, he was also sent to jail during the Emergency. In 1977, he was made Foreign Minister in the Janata Party government.

During this time he gave a speech in Hindi at the United Nations and he used to tell it the happiest moment of his life. After the fall of the Janata government in 1979, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was formed in 1980. Vajpayee was its founding member and the first president too. He was the BJP president from 1980 to 1986 and during this time he was also the leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party.

Three times Prime Minister

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected to the Lok Sabha for 10 times. He was a member of Parliament from the second Lok Sabha to the Fourteenth Lok Sabha. In the midst of his absence from some of the Lok Sabhas. Particularly in 1984 when he was defeated in the Gwalior by Congress's Madhavrao Scindia. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1962 to 1967 and 1986. On 16th May 1996, he became the Prime Minister for the first time.

But due to not being able to prove majority in the Lok Sabha, he had to resign on May 31, 1996. After this, he remained leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha till 1998. In the General Elections of 1998, he proved the majority of his coalition in the Lok Sabha along with the allies and thus became the Prime Minister once again. But this government could only run for 13 months. After withdrawing support from AIADMK, his government fell and once again the general elections were held.

The elections held in 1999 were fought on the joint declaration of the National Democratic Alliance and in Vajpayee's leadership, a major issue was made in these elections. The coalition won the majority and Vajpayee once again took over as the Prime Minister. While retiring from power politics in 2009, he was an MP from Lucknow. He was awarded the country's highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna in 2014.

One of his greatest accomplishments as Prime Minister included a test of a nuclear bomb in May 1998. Along with Pokhran-2, during his tenure, there were many such incidents which are still remembered.

These include the Kargil war, Lahore Summit, and Indian Airlines' Aircraft Hijack.
