Villages in the catchment areas of Tansa and Modak Sagar dams have been put on alert as the reservoirs are nearing their overflow limits due to heavy rainfall in Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra on Friday. Collectors, superintendents of police and civic authorities have been instructed to intimate villages located in the catchment areas of the two dams, said Santosh Kadam, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation.

At least 75 villages fall in the catchment areas of Tansa and Modak Sagar dams, an official said. At present the water level in Modak Sagar dam is 159.67 MTHD and its overflow limit is 163.15 MTHD.
