Assam Information Commission asked police to provide total number of land grabbing cases

The Assam Information Commission has asked the police to provide within 30 days the details of the total number of land grabbing cases reported in different police stations of the city as such cases have been on the rise.

The commission has been receiving several Right to Information RTI cases, especially in Guwahati with allegations of involvement of government functionaries, including those from the revenue department and police. With a view to informing the public about the status of implementation of the Assam Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act 2010, State Chief Information Commissioner H S Das has directed the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati to provide certain details on the police website.

The CIC directed the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati to provide within 30 days suo motu, through their website the details of a total number of land grabbing cases reported in different police stations of the city; the number of police cases registered; a number of cases presently under investigation.

The number of cases referred to the Special Tribunal set up for the purpose; the number of cases disposed of by Special Tribunal showing the number of acquittals and number of convictions since coming into force of the Assam Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act, 2010, were also directed to be provided. A government release here today said, "it has been informed that the Commission has decided to review action taken by the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati again on 10th September 2018,"
