Yankees acquire SS Hechavarria from Pirates

The New York Yankees added to their infield depth late Friday night by acquiring shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and cash considerations from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

The deal was struck just before the midnight ET deadline for players to be on a team's 40-man roster in order to be postseason-eligible.

Hechavarria joins his third team since the start of August, as he was dealt with Pittsburgh from the Tampa Bay Rays earlier in the month. The 29-year-old is making $5.9 million this season and will be a free agent this winter.

Hechavarria hit .254 with four home runs and 29 RBIs in 76 games between Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay. He is a career .255 hitter in seven major league seasons spent with the Pirates, Rays, Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays.

Hechavarria has primarily played shortstop throughout his career, though he also has big league experience and third and second base.

New York designated left-hander Ryan Bollinger for assignment in a corresponding move. Bollinger, 27, has yet to make his major league debut. He was 8-6 with a 3.87 ERA in a combined 20 starts for Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.
