The Belgian nuclear regulator has advised the government against extending the life of the country's three oldest reactors, citing safety and legal concerns, according to the regulator's opinion submitted to the government and seen by Reuters.

The FANC regulator instead recommended extending the life of two newer reactors without stopping them for a full safety upgrade. Under the plan, the reactors would undergo a series of staggered plan of safety upgrades to meet more stringent requirements over time.

A spokesperson for Belgium's energy minister said on Monday that the Belgian government had asked French company Engie , which operates the reactors through a subsidiary, to look at the regulator's proposal.
