Kerala Government to Re-Prioritise Financing Amid Electoral Setback: Finance Minister
The Finance Minister of Kerala, KN Balagopal, stated that the government will continue to focus on the social sector and re-prioritize financing. This follows the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls, which saw the LDF winning only one seat. The state faces a liquidity crunch and has sought a special financial package from the Centre.

Kerala's Finance Minister KN Balagopal declared on Sunday that the state government will maintain a strong emphasis on the social sector while re-prioritising financing for several activities. This decision comes in response to the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
The ruling LDF managed to secure just one seat, a shocker given the higher number of expected wins. The last Parliamentary polls in 2019 yielded a similar result with only one seat obtained. Balagopal, a senior CPI(M) leader, cited various political and governance issues, specifically pointing to the Centre's financial approach towards Kerala.
Facing a liquidity crisis, Kerala has requested a Rs 24,000 crore special package from the Centre. The state government has flagged reduced central funding and borrowing restrictions as significant hurdles. In an interview with PTI, Balagopal indicated that upcoming projects might be postponed but affirmed the government's dedication to essential spending. He also addressed criticism of the government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, attributing part of the blame to a targeted defamation campaign.
