In a significant move, state-owned NLC India Ltd has successfully secured the Machhakata coal mine in Odisha, as announced on Monday. The acquisition was made during the eighth round of commercial coal block e-auction.

The newly acquired coal mine holds reserves of approximately 1.38 billion tonnes and has a peak-rated operational capacity of 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This development is expected to enhance the country's energy security significantly.

This acquisition comes as NLC India's second coal mine victory after previously winning the North Dhadu coal block (Western Part). The company aims to bolster its capacity, envisioning an increase to over 100 MTPA by 2030 from the current 50 MTPA. In parallel, the coal ministry finalized the Coal Mining Development and Production Agreements for three mines, including the Machhakata coal mine, with successful bids coming from NLC India Ltd, Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd, and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited.
